What are the benefits of commercial EV charging points?

Commercial electric vehicle charging stations make business sense for all sorts of reasons.

Benefits include:

  • Being ahead of the game – the sale of all new vehicles in the UK will be electric by 2035, so be a forward-thinking business and switch now while government funds are available
  • It’s cost effective in the long run – the Workplace Charging Grant scheme softens the blow of up-front costs of installation, and then you’ll save more than £1,000 for every 10,000 miles your fleet travels. You’ll help your team cut their costs too. The employee ‘benefit in kind’ tax on a company car is 0%
  • Attract top talent – workplace EV charging points can be a great staff incentive to attract good people. If you’re without off-street parking at home you can’t access residential grants, so the chance to recharge at work is a fantastic employee perk
  • Boost your reputation and go green – electric vehicle charging points reduce your business’s carbon footprint and will boost its credentials as environmentally friendly and sustainable
  • Attract more customers – if your workplace is customer facing, consider the potential for offering charge points as an extra incentive to visit you
What do I need to consider when buying commercial EV charging stations?

First, select an electric vehicle charging point that meets your business’s needs. Who will be using them? It may be just your team. Or will your charging station be a service you provide for visiting customers?

When you know who your EV chargers are for, you can better understand the specification that’s right for you. This will include, for example

  • Charging speed
  • Number of ports and cables
  • Compatibility with a smart terminal and RFID (Radio Frequency Identify) cards

Second, think about your EV charging station location. It needs to be

  • Convenient for users
  • Easy to find and access
  • In a cost-effective and safe place (ideally, they will be close to existing electrical facilities and at least 2.5 metres away from any other energised equipment)
How much does it cost to install electric charging points for business?

Installation costs for electric car charging points will vary according to your business needs.

You may want just a handful of sockets for a small team or an entire bay for a fleet of vehicles. Electric Vehicle Charging Installers are pros at installing charging points for any size and type of company or organisation.

With the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) grants scheme, you can cut the cost of workplace charging points by up to £14,000.

Here’s your eligibility checklist:

  • Your application is for a business, charity or organisation
  • You have off-street parking and can outline a business need for electric vehicle charging points
  • Your charging points are installed by an OZEV-approved installer

Our friendly customer service team can help you apply for the digital voucher you’ll need, which you then present to us. The Workplace Charging Scheme grant is capped at £350 per socket and for up to 40 sockets.

What is the Workplace Charging Scheme and is my business eligible?

Here are the facts:

  • The Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) is a government grant issued to help support businesses with the installation of electric car charging points for their employees and customers
  • It’s available to any business, charity or organisation, with some conditions, and allows them to reduce the costs of installing workplace EV charging stations by up to £14,000 (£350 per socket, up to 40 sockets)
  • It is part of The Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) initiative to encourage the use of electric vehicles, helping more people to switch from petrol or diesel
  • To be eligible, you must have sufficient off-street parking and the installation must be carried out by OZEV-approved workplace charging installers

Our friendly team will be only too happy to help you make your application.

Should I switch my fleet to electric vehicles?

It’s no great bombshell to say that the transport sector is one of the most significant contributors to both CO2 emissions and air pollution in the UK.

By making the switch to electric you can cut your operational emissions by nearly three quarters.

Other benefits include a boost to your reputation as a company that thinks about more than just making profit. You’re environmentally conscious and you care about the planet that future generations will inherit.

Then there’s your bottom line. Electric cars can represent huge savings when driven for business use. Why?

EV charging costs are much lower than the price of petrol, so costs per miles for electric vehicles are significantly lower than those for internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles
Typically, conventional fleets can cut their fuel costs by around 80% by switching to battery electric vehicles (BEVs)
There are fewer moving parts in an electric vehicle compared to a ICE, which means lower maintenance costs
Company car drivers don’t have to pay any Benefit in Kind (BIK) tax, while there are also savings to be made on road tax, Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) and congestion charges

How do I choose a good commercial electrical charging point installer?

Here’s our checklist to make sure you choose wisely for your business:

  • Ask to what extent the price quoted is fixed. If you don’t receive a clear answer, beware
  • Query what equipment they recommend for you business and why. It’s a simple question that they should be able answer
  • Ask what the warranty you get for your charging points and installation.
  • Equipment manufacturers will generally give at least a three-year warranty. Also, check what the installer offers to cover their work
  • Make sure you don’t have to wait too long for your installation date. If they’re dealing with too many ustomers, you may struggle to get support if you have a problem
  • Ensure you can get through on the phone quickly and easily with your first call. If not, you may struggle to get support later if you need it
  • Find out what support will be available once your charging points have been installed. It should be comprehensive and fast. If your company and/or employees have EVs but you have a problem with your charging points, you’ll need it fixing quickly

Two things are vital and should be non-negotiable

  • Safety – your, your team’s and your customers’ safety must come first when it comes to electricity, so make sure your installer has a good reputation
  • Support – both on the phone for advice and on site if you need it

We give a five-year guarantee on our workmanship plus a unique customer promise – if you’re unhappy about anything we do, tell us and we’ll fix it without delay
